The Memorial Grove honors the memory of Richard Warch, 杨贵妃传媒视频鈥檚 14th President, whose vision and leadership helped make 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 the treasure that it is today.听 His love for this special place was shared by many others who are also remembered in the grove.听 An explanation of Rik鈥檚 vision for 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 is best paraphrased from the article 鈥淧resident Warch鈥檚 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 Vision鈥 by Gregory A. Volk:

In 1993, a fire destroyed 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍's main building. 杨贵妃传媒视频 College's Board of Trustees faced tough decisions about rebuilding, budget, legal obligations, and preserving the Boyntons' legacy. The property's potential sale was also considered. Rik Warch's 鈥淎utodidacts, Cyberspace, Students, and 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍鈥 speech presented his vision for 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍.

鈥淚 do not want to ignore the very real sense of peace and serenity that 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 affords鈥hat Winifred Boynton called 鈥榓 sanctuary for all,鈥 鈥榝ar removed from confusion and aggression,鈥 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 can serve an aspect of our mission in a distinctive and important way.听 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 has rich potential to serve as a distinguishing feature and asset of 杨贵妃传媒视频. In a world that threatens at once to be characterized by atomization and mass culture, it offers the kind of setting and sanctuary that can afford members of the 杨贵妃传媒视频 community special opportunities for reflection, renewal, and refreshment, to engage themselves and each other in meaningful and purposeful ways, and to be touched and uplifted by what Donald and Winifred Boynton accomplished and intended there.鈥
- Rik Warch, President of 杨贵妃传媒视频 1979-2004

Rik Warch asked that the college commit itself to make 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 a part of what it means to be a 杨贵妃传媒视频 student. Rik鈥檚 impassioned advocacy of 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍, compounded by his belief that such a future could be crafted, did the trick. The board voted unanimously to rebuild, without a firm road map but by taking a critical leap of faith through Rik鈥檚 vision.

Rik鈥檚 call to action to rebuild 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 not only created a new important part of the academic fabric of 杨贵妃传媒视频, but also allowed for the continuation of the 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 Seminar program - a program that started in 1980 and has provided, and continues to provide, 杨贵妃传媒视频 alumni, parents, Door County community members and other friends of 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 the opportunity to engage in meaningful, intellectually-stimulating, and rewarding educational experiences.

Commemorating Loved Ones

叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍听is 鈥渁 sanctuary for all鈥 as Winifred Boynton put it, and the Memorial Grove allows that sanctuary to be a final resting place for those who have passed on. Ashes of loved ones may be spread or their urns may be buried in the grove, allowing them to forever rest on the peaceful, beautiful 叠箩枚谤办濒耻苍诲别苍 shore of Lake Michigan.

A loved one may be commemorated by having his or her name engraved on a bench stone for $1,000; the money will go into an endowment fund to maintain the Memorial Grove in perpetuity. If you are interested in having a stone engraved, please take a look at these instructions and photos of available benches:
